Jamie Frost is a local fine artist working in sculpture, drawing and painting. He works figuratively and makes portraits, having recently been awarded the Talos award from the Society of Portrait Sculptors. As well as his figurative work, he will be discussing a series of pieces which are to do with physiological processes he is interested in. Jamie will also explain how he gained an insight into his own work by opening up his studio to others who wish to make art.

"I took up painting as a creative outlet after my son was born and then quickly found a real passion for printmaking. Initially I set up a gallery-style website to test whether there was a market for my work but I soon realised I was reaching hardly anybody so started my Folksy shop just under 2 years ago."

"I recently graduated from Falmouth University in Textile Design and have since been to London on placements. One placement was at Liberty working in the Art Fabrics studio in store. The second was in Ealing at Whiston and Wright working in their design studio where I designed 6 dress patterns that ended up going to Paris Fashion Week 2011.
In the future I hope to exhibit my work at more art markets, exhibitions and also gallery work. I also work to commission."

Andrew Greenbank
The marine environment has always been a very important part of my life, establishing happy memories. So it is no surprise sea life in its many diverse forms has become a dominating part of my portfolio.
Having done ceramic sculpture for more than a decade, I now mostly sculpt Humpback whales, Sperm Whales, Hermit Crabs, Penguins, Walrus, Angler Fish, Octopi, Tea Bowls and the unique Coral Pods.
From Hermit Crabs to Humpback Whales, texture and patterns play an integral part in my sculpture, both in the ceramic element and the other media’s often incorporated into my sculptures.
The Coral Pods Series came to fruition with my ceramic interpretation of an artwork by the Turner Prize winner Martin Creed, “Work No 126” ball of A4 paper. In a problematical process with individual paper moulds, I slip cast porcelain to produce the Coral Pods.

Tea Bowls portray the organic feel of the igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic coastal cliffs found around Great Britain.

My work seeks to capture the essence of human and animal behaviour and is a response to my fascination with the power of body language and movement.
Each piece of work is a unique composition with striking features and fluid lines. Surface texture plays an important part and l enjoy exploring the huge potential of the clay and the firing process to deliver new finishes.

Brendan Hesmondhalgh is co founder of The Art Market and has worked very hard curating this first Art Market Showcase.
Brendan Hesmondhalgh has always been inspired by the different form, movement and characteristics of nature. Large life-like sculptures, encapsulating real essence of his subjects as he sees through his own personal experiences. He work has been seen all over the world, including Sotheby's and at The Chelsea Flower Show.

Carine Brosse
Carine's work is about storytelling. Her inspiration comes from the bizarre and gruesome tales of the Grimm Brothers, Perrault, Herrault, Heinrich Hoffman and Hilaire Belloc. The work is very theatrical and playful to reference childhood. Carine is interested in explaining fairy tales as a symbolic language which across centuries speaks about family and morality, gender and the relationship between the sexes, violence, emancipation, growing up and growing old.

Carly Petit Taylor
"I find inspiration from everyday observations that other people often pass by, moss on the garden wall, UHT milk pots, and fungi growing on cheese. I am obsessed with multiples, and I am very much inspired by colour, flora and fauna, science and its order and structures. I always look for new materials, and different ways to manipulate them. My work is tactile and I encourage the wearer to change and manipulate the pieces, once handed over is out of my control. I like that the work keeps evolving without me"

Cath Hill
Inspired by landscapes and seascapes, natural objects and ancient jewellery, my work is about communicating my response to the world around me. I also want to evoke a sense of ancestry in something contemporary and wearable.
Alongside making I take photographs of all kinds of things that catch my eye... shapes, textures, patterns, elements of which often present themselves within my jewellery. No two pieces are ever exactly the same.
I work instinctively using basic techniques and processes and the versatile effects of the flame.

Our next Art Market is Friday 2nd December - Sunday 4th December ... we are really excited because over 35 of the very best artists and designer-makers around will be there selling their own work direct - come and "meet the makers" plus we open our very first showcase exhibition - work for sale and commission from selected Art Market artists over the past 4 years.

Installations from:

Jane Platts 'Dresser'&'Tree' were designed as displays,out of reclaimed cardboard, distressed & stitched but have become pieces in their own right. "My inspiration is textiles and reclaiming of materials and turning them into combinations that make you say Eh?! "

Oonagh Corr "This installation has been a fantastic opportunity to develop my work on a different scale and setting, comprising of a cluster of wire birds suspended in the gallery. I will be there with more wire creations in the making!"

Kirsty Shaw creates a range of lighting made from different types of plastics and inspired by colour, shapes and form. She produces table lamps, floor lamps, wall lights and LED candle lights. All her pieces are limited additions or small batch productions, making each piece unique.

Maneggi - Nikki Ainscow is designer/maker behind Maneggi – ‘the art of embellishment’. She create jewellery and accessories to enhance any wardrobe. All her pieces are unique and handmade to create a statement . . .

Agnis Smallwood is an interdisciplinary designer maker who graduated in 2009, with a first class honours degree in Contemporary Applied Arts from the University of Cumbria. Agnis has since set up her own business and is focusing on her textile work from her studio at home in Leeds. She was also awarded Licentiate membership of the Society of Designer Craftsmen in July 2009.

Angela & John Hinchcliffe collaborate on all aspects of the design and making, contemporary woven jewellery. Their designs are influenced by the jewellery of the ancient world, which inspires them to create pieces that both look back to the past, but are also very contemporary.

Anna Tosney was born and bred in Skipton. She is inspired by the Dales and the scenes of farming life that surround her. Her art work recreate the moody skies, amazing landscapes, and loveable characters of Yorkshire. Anna's style is to distil the scenes to their simplest forms, and the resulting work is both bold and contemporary.

Annie Peaker explores the beauty and movement using the female figure and animal forms as subject matter. Some of her figures are slightly elongated to emphasise elegance, some exude calm and serenity while others give the impression of communication and purpose. Humour also plays a part.

Beverley Porter Primarily specialising in figurative ceramics, Beverley's work ranges in scale from small individual figures, which can be picked up and turned in the hand, to larger pieces with a sculptural quality.

Charlotte Brown handcrafts jewellery in her studio in West Yorkshire. Her work is based around the theme of sentimentality and takes inspiration from the romantic connection people have with their jewellery and the memories each piece can evoke.

Creatively Occupied Ceramic artist, Michelle Freemantle uses a mix of handbuilt, press mould and thrown techniques, creating work that is tactile and visually pleasing. Lines and text are inscribed into the surfaces and slips and oxides applied.

Daniel Shield is a photographic artist is uses formal constructions of images with a unifying theme exploring details, highlighting variation and complexity through repetition.

Ella Mcintosh works from a workshop in the small town of Clitheroe, which is located in the Ribble Valley, Lancashire. Ella was introduced to pewter in 2006, whilst at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University studying for her first class Honours degree in Designed Metalwork and Jewellery where she won the Pewter Live 2006 student competition run by the Worshipful Company of Pewterers, Ella continued to work with pewter whilst at university and took this time to learn more about the metal. Since setting up her workshop in 2009 Ella has shown at many general public exhibitions and design fairs in the North West, her work can also be found in selected galleries throughout the country. Ella not only enjoys promoting her work and designs, but also telling a wider audience about the current revival of Pewter and its benefits as a metal. This can be seen in her enthusiasm as well as her designs and use of the metal.

Fiona Cameron creates her own style of jewellery on the eastern side of Bredon Hill on the edge of the Cotswolds. She uses silver and semi-precious stones to make exsquisite jewellery based on styles from many countries including Mexico, Africa and elsewhere.

Hilary Simm's trip to The Gambia provided the inspiration for her Nautilus collection. Shells and bones were collected on a deserted beach and these natural forms influenced her current work. The naked Raku finish seems to bring the forms to life.

Jane Cummins produces her work using a century old techniques of; feltmaking, woodturning and moulding plywood.
Jane's fascination with felt is in the making process how the fibres matt together producing a fabric and how the process can be manipulated to produce shape. Whilst looking for a material that would compliment the felt Jane was introduced to woodturning. Using the lathe Jane works with the grain to produce contrasting textures and patterns to the surface of the wood, the handmade felt adding further colour and texture.

Jane Eastwood, a textile designer and weaver exploits structure with materials. Her work covers designs for upholstery, windows, walls, floors, throws, scarves and art installations. A hand woven and factory production facility for projects is available for interior designers, architects and private consumers

Perth born Jim Bond was brought up surrounded by art for his mother is well-known painter Marj Bond, but he is very clearly his own man. Primarily Bond is a sculptor; often using copper and steel to create skeletal work that feels as fragile and vulnerable as the human body. He may also incorporate letters or numbers into it, suggesting thought-DNA, software behind the hardware. Bond is also a kinetic artist creating work such as “blink,” an eyeball that blinks when you look at it, as well as larger mechanical museum pieces.
Bond has just finished a major commission for Cambridge university and has exhibited widely throughout the UK and beyond.

Julie Miles Sculptural and functional ceramics using nature both as inspiration and material for her work. Julie works with both porcelain and brick clay to produce two diverse ranges of work which you can explore through the different galleries here. Her porcelain work uses traditional slab building techniques to create vessel forms from abstract landscape inspired vessels to battered watering cans and tea light holders. Flowers, petals and fabrics are also used but are dipped in porcelain to create new surfaces that when exposed to light reveal details of prints, drawings and impressions taken from the landscape.

Julia Ogden paintings have been published by Milkwood Publishing and her prints can be found in lots of different galleries in the country. Julia has been published internationally by Washington Green, she paint many subjects from landscapes, to florals, to figurative. Her interests are colour and composition.

Julie Langan Glass is an inspirational contemporary design studio who specialise in the creation of unique and innovative pieces of glass art. The pieces usually in the form of panels can be integrated into both interior and exterior architectural spaces or simply displayed as individual pieces of art.

Kate Wimbush specialises in creating original and exciting jewellery in silver and resin. Developing her own unique method of casting and cutting resin, she combined and enhanced miniature silver elements, oxidised and etched for surface pattern detail, with rich jewel coloured resin.

Kate has participated in a number of exhibitions nationwide and worked for an independent designer maker alongside creating her own jewellery. More recently, relocation to Manchester provided Kate with a creative respite and she is now working on a new range of silver and gold collections, introducing colour through resin, semi-precious stones and Swarovski crystals.

Liliane Taylor

Through her painting, Liz Salter explores aspects of landscape. She is fascinated by wild, undiscovered, rough places, undisturbed by man, where weather, time and the rhythms of the seasons mould and change the landscape. This relationship may be explored by looking at the panorama of the land, or going in close to examine some small anonymous place.

Behind Vitrum Glass Designs is Leeds based designer-maker Lydia Haines. Her work explores the relations between material and space, light and shadow, transmission and reflection.

“My work is about indulging the senses,” Haines says. “I want people to feel, touch and experience my work. I like to use texture, colours and forms to stimulate the senses and evoke emotions.”

“People who come to me want something different for their homes or office space - a 'wow factor', something that brings the space to life and reflects who they are.”

Matthew Thompson young artist originally from the Huddersfield area, now studying at Manchester School of Art. He works in the media of paint, charcoal and pastels creating a passionate and expressive take on everyday scenes.

Helen from Mercury Arts work is generally inspired by my experiences of the natural world and often considers the way that man-made objects interact with the landscape – the cut of a wooden fence into the surface of a reservoir or the layering of wind swept ice against a stone wall. She also really enjoys designing for children and this gives her the chance to indulge in my love of bright colours and make believe. Two very different styles but wrapped up in a desire to offer joy, originality, quality and new memories to those who come into contact with the things she has created.

Print for Love of Wood a small design & letterpress studio in Lancashire dedicated to the love of wood type and tree hugging paper.
It is a labour of love by freelance graphic designer Jacqui Sharples, a Lancashire lass inspired by a passion for print, the smell of ink, vintage typography and her collection of wood type.
Jacqui prints in house on a range of vintage printing presses, including a Victorian treadle, using traditional methods of hand setting type.

All the presses are manually operated so the only energy used is an eco friendly light bulb and some muscle power! All the paper and card is tree friendly stock and the ink is recycled from printers who have closed down due to the impact of digital on traditional print methods.

Sequel bags are created by Laura Queening and Claire Baigent are made from leather jackets, tweed suits, second-hand silk ties and pre-loved curtains, providing the unique details that can be found on Sequel products. All of our material is carefully selected from Oxfam Wastesaver. We only choose the best quality material, even if the clothing itself has long since passed its fashion sell-by date.

They use recycled materials wherever possible, with all swing tickets, packaging and stationery made from recycled paper. Sequel London aim to reuse whatever materials they can on a day to day basis, reducing waste and encouraging environmental sustainability in fashion.

New Work by Victoria Ashworth presents digital Landscapes combining drawing and photography. She loves using the organic nature of drawing, through observation and memory and mixing the two mediums together.

Jonny Walker was born in Liverpool, grew up in Paraguay where he first discovered his love of music and the Beatles in particular. At 9 years old a friend of his dad's lent him a copy of "A Hards Day's Night" and it was love at first sight...

Jonny makes his living from playing music for the last few years and it has been on a wonderful adventure. He has played all over the world including a few celebrity parties. However, his heart belongs on the streets, "There's a kind of magic playing on the streets that you can't get from playing in doors. It's the people you meet, the songs you can share, and the sense of freedom and being alive. The one big downside is the weather!"

I'm doing the6th November. I'm really excited about it and looking forward the most to meeting everyone and talking to them about the work and hearing theirviews. It would be great to get someorders but the most important thing is to find out if Time4oclock has a futurebeyond the Art Market.

This is thefirst time the clocks will be shown. It's the realisation of an idea I've hadknocking around my head for about 10 years. I'd really like to hear people's opinion of them. I thinkthey will make a striking addition to any home,office or workspace. They've got that traditional yet modern appeal which seemsto be in vogue at the moment. I've beengetting plenty of positive feedback from friends and family but this reallywill be a great opportunity to see if theidea can be taken further.

SCENE: The Art Market Winter Event

Holmfirth in West Yorkshire is affectionately known for many things, not least because it is the setting for the world’s longest running sitcom, Last of the Summer Wine. More recently it has been the host of a fast-growing creative event called The Art Market, which is putting this bustling little Yorkshire town on the map.

What started four years ago as an experimental one day event to bring art to the people of Holmfirth, has become a successful cultural destination point for the area, growing from 26 artists to nearly 100 and now taking place over two consecutive Sundays every year - specifically 6th and 13th of November. The Art Market was launched by artists for artists; namely Brendan Hesmondhalgh, Victoria Robinson and Deb Price, who now co-ordinate the event together with new comer and exhibitor, Emily Stubbs.

“We were part of a small group of artists in the Holmfirth area,” explains Art market co-organiser Victoria. “At that time all of the local art galleries had closed down and we felt there was nowhere for people to buy contemporary art, craft and design. So we decided to organise an arts event for Holmfirth drawing upon the larger community of artists and makers that we knew in the area.”

She continues: “The Art Market gives creative people the opportunity to show what they can do, exhibiting in their home town rather than having to travel to other shows around the UK. It also allows local people and visitors the chance to meet the maker and talk to them about their work so we insist that all the artists must attend on the day and be a face to their work. That way people can communicate freely and find out what the artist thinks rather than say the gallery owner’s view.”

Art Market co-organiser Brendan adds, “The Art Market is very much about accessibility and affordability as well as being family-friendly, while still offering the high standard of work you’d expect to see in a gallery setting.”

Artists follow a strict application process and are judged solely on the quality of their work, rather than their location. The mix of artists and their work is also rotated in the interests of fairness as well as to ensure that each market is different on each of the days and every year. There’s also a good balance of artistic disciplines represented in the market, including art, jewellery, sculpture, glass, lino prints, wirework, paintings, ceramics, bookbinding, photography, lighting, textiles, accessories and more, plus installations and demonstrations.

"We have no idea what might come through and it’s one of our favourite parts of the process,” says Victoria, “especially when you discover someone really talented. We are looking for artists whose work is amazing and well made. I’m excited about all our artists, especially Cathy Miles’ wirework, Samantha Bryan's mix-media sculpture’s and David Roberts who is famous for his Raku Ceramics!"

The organisers have different backgrounds, which is reflected in the eclectic mix of work that is chosen to take part in the Art Market and is one of the reasons the event is so unique in comparison to other art and craft fairs.

“Event organisation is not our main occupation,” says Victoria “we are artists first and foremost, so we are not looking to just fill stands and make money. We want to create an event that’s a fantastic thing to participate in and that will inspiring, leaving the visitor with thoughts of the work long after the event. The Art Market is seen as a ‘Must not miss, unless I’m out of the country!’ event by a great deal of locals. We are very fortunate that not only does the Holme Valley house a pocket of talented creative artists, it also houses an interested, supportive and ‘collecting’ audience.”

Brendan explains, “I think the Art Market is successful because we understand what the artists need,”. “We try to be very flexible, friendly and accessible. In many ways Victoria offers an element of pastoral care to some of our artists.”

As artists, the organisers also know what exhibitors want and need from an event. Unlike some other shows, the Art Market charges a set price for a stand and any money the artist makes on the day is theirs; there are no hidden extras. The team also does a lot of work to promote the artists, not just on the day but ahead of the event through its website and with marketing, which includes a social media campaign using twitter, email as well as physical promotion using banners.

“In the future we’d like to develop the Art Market to make it even more interactive with more live demonstrations and workshops so it’s not just about buying and selling. We want to show people more about the whole art and design business and what an important trade it is.”

At each Art Market, the team selects two new comers and for this November, textile designer Amy Stubbs and jeweller Jane Branney will receive a free stand and mentoring for the event.

The Art Market is on November 6th and 13th at Holmfirth indoor market from 10 – 4pm. Refreshments will be available all day. £2 entrance fee to get into the event, while children under 14 are free.

I’m a Textile Artist based inHolmfirth. I have a studio in the centreof the town: 58 Huddersfield Road to be precise, from there I run creativeworkshops and evening classes as well as making my Artwork.

I graduated from GoldsmithsCollege…well let’s just say it was a while ago and received an MA in Textiles afew years afterwards! I’ve always ‘created’and love to pass on my skills.

Midas contemporary applied arts is thename of my shop here in Lincoln and I specialize in selling design ledjewellery, ceramics, glass, textiles and much more. I have had my business for 11 years.

What discipline do you work in?

I have been making and designing nonprecious jewellery for the past four years.

What is your favourite piece in your collection?

My latest pieces are my favorites andthese are printed, die cut bracelets, earrings and necklaces.

I am doing the 6th of November and it’s a real treat for me to come to Holmfirth as I used to livethere for many years. Not only do I getto sell my own work but I have a chance to catch up with old friends, I cantwait!

Anything you would like to add?

I currently have a range of my printedwork for sale at the British Museum as part of the Grayson Perry exhibition,The art of the Unknown Craftsman. I wasasked to make a number of pieces using a Batik design that Grayson selected aspart of his exhibition which runs until 19^th February 2012.

What day are you doing The Art Market on, and whatare you looking forward too the most?

I’m doing the firstweekend the 6^th of November, and I’m looking forward to reconnectingwith folks I’ve met there before, and trying out my new display, which has hada total revamp!

Anything you would like to add?

I’ve been busy developing work in other materialsthis year, so in addition to works in copper and silver I’m creating mylovelies in Stainless steel, coloured aluminium and brass. There are lots of new designs too, and somegorgeous, chunky stones being set into many of my pieces too.

I create hand cut papercutartwork - so paper, but I do use a mixture of the computer and hand drawing tocreate my papercut templates.

My favourite piece in mycollection is my most recent product - a framed personalised papercutsilhouette that I draw and cut by hand, making every single one as unique asthe person receiving it!

I have been making Jewellery for a fewyears but only decided to take the brave step forward to sell my work in July2011. The Art Market will be the launch of my work.

What discipline do you work in?

I work predominately in silver, handcrafting jewellery where each piece is unique. I enjoy rummaging in junk shopsand markets for inspiration but also to find original materials for my work.Vintage textiles fascinate me and I love to imprint them into silver, providingcontrasting textures and a sense of history for my jewellery. Interest and colour in the jewellery comesfrom adding old beads. I find the colours in the old beads contrast wonderfullywith silver because they are somehow more delicate and luminescent than modernbeads.

I am interested in reusing materialsand making something that was once treasured, treasured again. My aim is tomake someone feel special through my jewellery. I want to get away from themass market of jewellery, to enable individuals to have jewellery that willstand the test of time and that will be something that can be worn again andagain.

What is your favourite piece in your collection?

My cufflinks are my favorite pieces inmy collection as they carry special meaning for me. I made a set of cufflinks for my husband towear when we got married using lace which used to be my grandmothers to imprintonto the silver. I loved how I could use my grandmothers once treasured laceand give it new life and meaning. I have used this design to create similarpieces for my collection.

What exhibitions, shows, events do you have coming up?

I have no plans beyond the Art Market,which will be my first event and launch of my work. I am busy getting everything ready for themarket in November but do have a website, which I will develop furtherafterwards (where future exhibitions, events and shows will be posted)

I am often makinginteresting discoveries at markets, which either influence my work or can be usedto make new pieces. What day are you doing the art market on, and what are you lookingforward to the most?

I am exhibiting on the 6^thNovember. At the moment everything about the art market seems exciting as it ismy first time exhibiting (although I have been a shopper there last year). Icannot wait to show people my jewellery and get their response. It is sowonderful when people try on my jewellery (something I always encourage) as itbrings it even more to life. I think jewellery takes on new meanings when it isworn and I hope that my pieces become things that people can treasure. I mainlywork on my own but relish meeting other people, so I am looking forward tomeeting other crafts people and lovers of design.

I graduated in 2005 but began toseriously pursue my art and craft in 2007.

Whatdiscipline do you work in?

I would call myself a mixed mediaartist in that I work in a range of disciplines – I paint, sculpt and sew andam always eager to try new ways of working in order to bring my ideas andimaginations to life. I don’t put limits on the materials I work with or theskills needed to make my work – I come up with an idea and then figure out thebest way to create the piece even if it means learning a completely new skill –I enjoy the problem solving aspects of art and craft.

Whatis your favourite piece in your collection?

Oh it is so hard to pick one favouritepiece although it is usually whatever I am currently creating. I amparticularly fond of my clay charactersas they have such a life of their own but I also love the recent paintings Ihave been working on. My clay characters are soon to have wee dwelling placeswhich will be used to display them. I am also working on a couple of largerpieces which will be strung marionettes. I am excited to be trying out newideas in my current work and as always there is the whimsical and melancholyatmosphere at the heart of it.
